Crafty Bastards - The Summer Show

Weekend before last, I went up to Washington, actually a bit past Washington to Silver Spring, Maryland, to be part of the special Summer Edition of the Crafty Bastards Craft Show. Jeremy and I left on Friday evening, stopping in Fredericksburg (where we met, went to school and fell in love) to have dinner downtown at Sammy T's. Then we got to our hotel very late, got up around 7 am on Saturday and headed over to the show. Setting up was very hot, but really not all that bad. The show was was well-attended and the other artists and crafters were awesome. It only rained for about two minutes, which was great because it was *supposed* to rain a lot in the late afternoon. We packed up the whole booth at the end of the show in about 45 minutes, which is very fast for me, and were home in Richmond by 8:30 pm, where we spent a little time with our Beagle, Tela, and then went out to eat sushi, yum. . . I wish all craft shows could be so pleasant, believe me I had some rough ones this Spring.

Art Star in Philly

I spent last weekend in Philly at the Art Star Craft Bazaar. The show was a success despite the unpleasant weather on Saturday and the slightly stressful load-in and load-out (which always seems to be the case when you make pottery, for me anyway). I got see and talk to all sorts of artists, designers and crafters that I just adorn - not the least of which are my fellow Richmond Craft Mafia members. It was mt first year at the show and the first year in was at the new venue right on the river in City Center. I had a great view of the water from my booth spot, but it was very windy at the top of concrete hill I was on - a booth near mine even blew over!
A special thanks my husband for driving and helping to load and unload the car so many times, the ladies at Art Star for putting on the show, and everyone who came out to the show - especially on Saturday in the rain.

So with school out of the way, I'm busy doing art and craft shows, getting ready for more art and craft shows, throwing pottery, making tiny little clay birds to put on pottery, making, glazing and assembling porcelain jewelry, going to IKEA for new display furniture, putting together said IKEA display furniture and generally trying to catch up on everything that got set aside while I was Student Teaching this Winter & Spring.

I finished up with Student Teaching about two weeks ago and I graduated on Saturday - so I will be receiving my Teaching License from the Commonwealth of Virginia in Visual Art (PreK-12) sometime this Summer. Yay!

Kiln Opening in Mathews Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Saturday -November 17th , is the first of the 2007 Kiln Opening at The Poddery in Mathews County, Virginia, where I create most of my work. I have worked along side The Poddery's owners, Robert and Karen Podd, going on 14 years now.

The Kiln Openings are always a good time for us and our visitors. The Showroom is full of pottery and I have my best section of pottery and jewelry for the Holiday Shopping Season on display.

If you miss the Kiln Opening tomorrow - there's another one next Saturday - November 24th, too.

Last Sunday, Jeremy and I went to DC for the Crafty Bastards Art and Craft Show put on by the City Paper. The weather was beautiful and the show was awesome. The Richmond Craft Mafia was also there right across the aisle from me.

I will be in Alexandria tomorrow for Art on the Avenue and we are expecting another beautiful day - so come on out if you're in the Capital Region tomorrow!

So I was really busy at the studio this week finishing up a wholesale order, loading the kiln for my upcoming show - Crafty Bastards - and just getting stuff done so I can go to the beach for part of next week for a mini-vacation, but I couldn't resist making more little bird bowls! They are just so cute and fun to make. I don't really see myself as having much talent in the area of sculpting - so I really surprised myself with how well these birds are coming out. Each little bird is completely unique and has it's own little personality. I even made some humming birds! More pictures on Flickr.

My Dad took this awesome picture the other day while attending a gardening institute put on by Monticello and UVA - it was a happy accident. I told him this picture justified him having his own Flickr account. Then I proceeded to show him that there are already lots of pictures of him on Flickr - taken by strangers (which he thought was totally bizarre). He works as a garden historian for Colonial Williamsburg and visitors photograph him a lot and some of them post them on Flickr - we left comments for some of the pictures of him. If you search "Williamsburg" and "garden" on Flickr you get lots of pictures of the garden Dad works in and some of Dad, too.

I've been really busy making new jewelry, packing pottery and getting ready for my big trip to New York this weekend! I'll be representing the Richmond Craft Mafia along with my fellow members: Nicole, Beth, Kelly, another Kelly and maybe Deanna at the Brooklyn Renegade Craft Fair. We be rollin' up to New York this Friday and will hopefully get there in time to help Etsy celebrate it's second birthday.

Everyone in the Richmond Craft Mafia got together over the weekend to eat some burgers and plan out how on Earth we would be able to get 12 people's crafty work into a 10 x 10 space. We also took some time to get get some pictures taken of us by a very talented young photographer.

I've been working on porcelain flowers for the past few monthes for earrings and necklaces. So far they have been a big hit - I guess I'll start making some more tomorrow. I also need to work on more porcelain ginkgo leaves for earrings - I completely sold out of them.

Spring Bada-Bing, the first craft show I helped produce and organize, is over and done and I'm really tired and sore still from Sunday and it's Tuesday! The show ended up being just beautiful - all the different crafters, designers and artists work looked great together. I ended up being pleasantly surprised by a few sellers, who almost didn't get into the show, because their displays were some of the best at the show. Just goes to show that taking good pictures is so important! You might have awesome work but if the images that you send in to get juried for a show don't reflect that you might not get into any shows and no one will ever know just how great your work really is!

A big THANKS! to my fellow Richmond Craft Mafia members, all the great volunteers, my husband Jeremy for providing the music for the show, all the vendors and all the folks that came out to see the show and go shopping.

Kiln Building

The new kiln is built around a recycled wooden form.

Once the walls are up the wooden form is removed to make room for the arch's form (which has been used to build several past kilns at The Poddery). Rob Podd is seen on the ladder placing the arch bricks on top of the wooden arch form.

The arch is cemented with a special high-temperature mortar.

The custom welded metal frame for the door is placed on it's track. This door will slide into place before each firing - this is a new feature, in the past the kiln door was stacked by hand brick by brick before each firing (usually by me - it was my least favorite task).

I bricked up the new door (hopefully for the first and last time).

Jason Podd had to weld the kiln door's hanging mechanism over again because the weight of the bricks changed the center of gravity of the door and the door didn't hang straight anymore.

I finished stacking the door today and Rob Podd added the extra layer of insulation on top of the kiln, so now it's pretty much ready to fire for the first time!

We pulled down our old kiln today at the Poddery. It's the kiln that I've fired in my entire career in pottery. We took it down brick by brick so we could re-use as many of the fire-bricks as possible - lots of the bricks have already been used in several kilns in the past. The new kiln's construction will start on Saturday. Check back by for construction photos.

Busy Month . . .

Well, I finally get a weekend off from doing Art Shows. I do have another one next weekend though. All the shows went really well except that at all but one of them it started to rain when it was time to pack up the show, which makes for a lot of extra work when I unpack. I received an Award of Distinction at the Gosport Art Show in Portsmouth and an Honorable Mention Award at the Fredericksburg Arts Festival.

My husband and I got to eat at one of his favorite restaurants when we were in Portsmouth, the Bier Garden, it's a great German place.

I've spent the last last few days at home working on applications for Fall shows, paperwork, taking pottery photos and my new website. I'm back in the studio tomorrow.

My First Time as a Craft Show Volunteer

I'll be volunteering at a craft show for the first time on Saturday, April 22nd - I usually set up my booth and sell my pottery at these things. The show is the Spring Bada-Bing (it runs from 10am-4pm - rain or shine at the 17th Street Farmer's Market at 17th and Main in Richmond, Virginia) I thought it would be fun to go and just help out other crafters for a change, no worries about my sales, etc.

I get to worry about that soon enough - my next show is next Sunday in Williamsburg. This will be my first time at Art on the Square, I'm looking forward to it. Then I will have shows every weekend until May 20th or so. Busy, busy, busy.

My sculpture, titled "Jim Head," was featured yesterday, April 15th, on the Front Page of the Etsy.com page. Today the Front Page featured Easter related items and several of them sold during the course of the day. When this happens eventually the Featured Items from the day before get bumped back up to the Front Page again. Well . . . "Jim" made it back to the Front Page and he looked very out of place with all those eggs, bunnies and chicks!

Jim also has a wife and son. They can hang on the wall.

(This was the first "screen shot" that I ever took, my husband told me how to do it - it was really easy and I've been wanting to know how to do it for awhile)

Knitting Needle Jar

A Place To Store Your Knitting Needles

I started this pattern when I was making large bowls as "Thank You" presents for all my bridesmaids last Summer, each one had their favorite animal on it, but my older sister doesn't really have a favorite animal, so I fretted about what to put on her bowl for days and days - then it came to me a knitting themed bowl!

Karen Podd, a potter I work with, who knits (I don't know how to knit), made me a little knit square to press the clay into to make the little mittens and sweater (the original bowl also featured a pair of socks, a scarf and a purse), this one also has a ball of yarn and knitting needles on it. It's made of high-fire stoneware clay, has a shiny denim-colored blue glaze on it and is 7.5 inches tall. It has a sort of squared-off lip and is round at the bottom.

I've recently started making earrings out of the stoneware clay that I use to make my pottery. Here's the first pair I've had a chance to photograph - they're for sale in my etsy.com shop. I'll have earrings, pins and magnets for sale at my upcoming craft shows in addition to my functional pottery (except for the Gosport Festival in Portsmouth- due to show regulations).

My Pottery Wedding

Jeremy Weiland and I were married on September 17th, 2005 in the garden at the pottery studio where I work, The Poddery owned by Robert and Karen Podd. It was a beautiful day, our friend Andrew Hall performed the ceremony, my best friend's Dad - Bill Walker provided the ceremony music, my friend - Marissa Queen made our yummy cake (I helped with the ginkgo leaves) and our very bestest friends in the whole world made up our wedding party: Sara Walker, Bill Grothe, Shanna and Indigo Chandler, Matt Walters, Kristal McKelvey, Gary Bean, Lauren Richards, Chris Weiland, Marissa Queen, John Weiland, Melissa McKelvey and Dan Messier. Our parents, Don & Joyce McKelvey and Paul & Kathy Weiland helped us so much in making it such a special day, as well as all of our friends and family.

Getting Ready for my Spring Shows

I'm busy preparing for all the shows I have lined up for the Spring season, with the first one just twenty days away. I've got lots of new designs in the works. I'm busy making and glazing pottery for my upcoming Craft Shows.

We fire the kiln a lot this time of year to build up our inventory for the busy Spring and Summer season and even to get a jump start for next Holiday Season.

I also have nice selection of new work for sale at The Poddery http://thepoddery.artroof.com in Mathews County right now.

Over the last few weeks I've been updating and adding to my website.

I recently set up shop on etsy.com instead of the old and not-so-great online shop service that I've had for about two years.

Etsy.com is really great, the style of most of the work on it is just fantastic. Esty.com is marketplace for hand-made items, plus some supplies and vintage items.

Etsy has been a new source of inspiration for me, it's the first online community I've actually really gotten into.

As an Intro to my work, here's a description of me in relation to my clay work:

Tasha McKelvey creates functional clay works. She currently resides in Richmond and shows her work in galleries across Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic region. Her recent work has been heavily influenced by textiles and she tries to incorporate the same detailing that one might find in quilted works in her pottery. She creates work using a potter’s wheel as well as slab formed pieces. She carves her “quilted” designs into linoleum and impresses those into the clay to create forms such as: platters, bowls, sushi sets, pouring vessels, storage boxes, cups and wall pieces.
